In 2018, I co-founded Alright Mate? with playwright and mental health nurse Cally Hayes. Alright Mate? is a community interest company that produces participatory arts projects that address male mental health.
In my role as co-director of Alright Mate? I have worked with people from a wide range of backgrounds including sports clubs, the construction industry, and the veteran community to create books, audio resources, and videos that let people know they are not alone in their struggles with mental health. Below is a sample of projects from Alright Mate?.
In response to the alarming statistics surrounding mental health in construction, we created an interactive poster for construction sites and offices that offers members of the industry an opportunity to hear other members of the industry talk openly about their own experiences and ideas about mental health. In 2019 we made this short video with the Exeter Chiefs.
We have created a series of audiovisual installations that display a range of portraits, accompanied by headphones in which audiences can hear those in the photos talk about their own ideas and experiences of mental health. This image was taken in Roots Foundation Barbershop and Social Space in Exeter.
We invited a group of veterans together to make a booklet by veterans for veterans about mental health; stories, tips, ideas, and people to speak to. Read more.
