I offer a range of service outlined below. If you are interested in discussing how we may work together, please get in touch here. Below are also a selection of testimonials.
Whether you are on your first or fifth draft of a script, a second pair of eyes is always useful. I offer a thorough script reading service, beginning with an initial consultation about your aims and ideas for the script, which then inform a detailed script report, and annotated copy. All feedback I offer is designed to be constructive and help realise possibilities for the next draft. I usually aim to send reports back within a week.
£100 for 1 hour scripts (up to 70 pages)
£75 for half hour scripts (up to 35 pages)
£20 for first ten pages of your script.
Turnaround for feedback: usually up to 10 days.
The role of a dramaturg can be many things to many pieces of work. In my mind, it is essentially someone who helps the creators(s) of the work interrogate their own ambitions for the piece and help realise and weave together all available possibilities for the development of the work. The dramaturgical process is relevant at all stages of development, whether sketching out initial ideas, or polishing a last draft. For this kind of thing, an initial consultation is essential and I offer this for free.
I have worked with theatre-makers, musicians, artists, playwrights, and poets in this capacity, and also hold an MA with distinction in Dramaturgy and Writing For Performance.

I believe there is something immensely powerful about the relationship between a live performer and an audience, and I have had the privilege of providing the words and stories for these interactions for a number of years. I believe every play can do something unique, and in working to briefs, it is my job to find and deliver that something. I have experience writing on commission for young people, professional theatres, examples of this include:
The Guide: A short play for the students of City And Islington College to perform,
written through discussions and workshops with themselves and the director.
Stomping On Shadows: A 60-minute two-hander written for Theatre West for a two week run at Hamilton House in Bristol as part of their season of new work.
I have also self-initiated writing projects, which have resulted in pieces being performed in venues including Theatre 503, Battersea Arts Centre, The Bike Shed Theatre, and Theatre Royal Plymouth.
These fees are subject to further discussion about your aims and timescales, and again, if you are interested or would like to know more, the best way to proceed is to have a chat.
£3000+ for a play over 60 minutes
£2500 for a play between 30 and 60 minutes
£1000 for a play under 30 minutes
"It was amazing collaborating with Hugh on The Guide He helped to shape and write a beautiful play that exceeded our expectations… I’ve worked with quite a few playwrights and Hugh really is such a pleasure to work with mainly because he really listens to all involved in the project and isn’t afraid of working with multiple ideas! I would love to work with him again."
Tim Chaundy, director of The Guide.
"Hugh was able to ask me questions about the show I'd have never considered. Using a range of techniques he helped me to examine Sunked from the inside out; exploring its themes, characters and plot with real insight and enthusiasm."
Chris White, writer/performer of Sunked.
